My approach
Hi, I’m Abigail Plaisance, LICSW, and I support professionals in Washington, DC, who are experiencing burnout from high-intensity jobs, as well as anxiety and depression.
I offer a warm, welcoming approach to burnout, anxiety, and depression, tailored to you. I first create a safe, nonjudgmental space to hear what’s hardest. Then we work together to identify what causes your stress and exhaustion, how anxiety affects you, and the patterns that keep your mood low.
My approach blends evidence-based strategies with practical, individualized support:
Assessment and listening: We map symptoms, triggers, strengths, and resources so treatment is grounded in your life and goals.
Collaborative planning: We set realistic, client-directed goals and prioritize small, achievable steps to reduce overwhelm.
Skills and tools: Depending on your needs, I introduce techniques such as pacing and boundaries for burnout, grounding and breathing for anxiety, behavioral activation for depression, and cognitive strategies to reframe unhelpful thoughts.
Emotion-focused work: I help you safely explore underlying emotions and unmet needs that fuel burnout and mood symptoms, fostering self-compassion and clearer self-understanding.
Lifestyle and systems: We address sleep, movement, nutrition, work-life balance, and social supports, and problem-solve practical barriers like workplace demands or caregiving responsibilities.
Flexible pacing: Progress isn’t linear; I adjust interventions and pace to match your capacity so you can build resilience without added pressure.
Relapse prevention and maintenance: We develop strategies to recognize early warning signs and create sustainable routines to maintain gains.
Throughout, my stance is collaborative, empathetic, and realistic: I honor your pace, validate the difficulty of what you’re facing, and focus on practical changes that reduce suffering and increase meaning. If helpful, I also coordinate with other providers or refer to additional resources to ensure comprehensive care.
